South Australia’s Commissioner for Consumer Affairs through Consumer and Business Services (CBS) is warning members of the public against doing business with Sam Branco, trading as Mates Rates Shutters and Blinds.

Commissioner for Consumer Affairs Martyn Campbell said the decision was taken after receiving complaints about the business, including a failure to supply products within a reasonable time and a failure to refund consumers thousands of dollars for work that was never undertaken.

“CBS is treating these allegations seriously and actively investigating the matters raised and will take appropriate action,” he said.

“We’ve been advised that Mr Branco is often going door-to-door, soliciting business for ‘Mates Rates Shutters and Blinds’.

“Not only is Mr Branco unlicensed for this type of work, but the contracts he is entering into don’t appear to comply with the protections under the Australian Consumer Law that apply to unsolicited consumer contracts.

“In addition, several consumers have told us they are owed significant amounts of money for work that never progressed.

“Given the nature of the allegations raised and the potential for consumer detriment, we are warning South Australians not to enter into contracts with Sam Branco trading as Mates Rates Shutters and Blinds.”

Mr Campbell encouraged any consumers who have had dealings with either Mr Branco or Mates Rates Shutters and Blinds to contact CBS to assist with the ongoing investigation on 131 882.
